Dr. Zallen is a Regional Medical Executive at Evolent Health, working with the team to implement the clinical program and help provider clients to succeed in accountable care arrangements, and helping to develop new and expanded partnerships with provider systems. Prior to Evolent, Dr. Zallen spent three years as the Chief Medical Officer at Children’s Hospital Integrated Care Organization (CHICO), a collaboration of Boston Children’s Hospital, the hospital’s specialists, and a network of 400 pediatricians in more than 80 community practices in Massachusetts. While at CHICO Dr. Zallen led the development and management of accountable care efforts for an at-risk pediatric primary care patient population (65,000) across Boston Children’s integrated health system.
Prior to his time at Boston Children’s, Dr. Zallen was a medical director at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) for 13 years where he was an architect of the Alternative Quality Contract (AQC), which was the model for Medicare’s Pioneer Accountable Care structure. Dr. Zallen earned his A.B. in Biology at Brown University and his M.D. at Northwestern University Medical School. He did his pediatric residency at Boston Floating Hospital and Children’s Hospital in Boston and also completed a fellowship in General and Developmental Pediatrics at Children’s. Following a few years on the faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Zallen joined Harvard Community Health Plan (HCHP) (now Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (HVMA)). He was a Health Center Director at HCHP/HVMA for 10 years before joining BCBSMA.
